Wrong site, wrong plane — the most common Brisbane antenna fault
Mount Coot-tha transmits VHF horizontally at 50 kW; Darlington Range transmits UHF vertically at 1.8 kW. They need different antennas mounted in different planes. An antenna aimed at the wrong site works in fair weather and pixelates in wind and rain — and no amount of amplification fixes a polarisation mismatch. Which transmitter serves my Brisbane address?
Most of metropolitan Brisbane is served by Mount Coot-tha (VHF Band III, horizontal polarisation, 50 kW). Much of the south-east - Springwood, Daisy Hill, Beenleigh, Logan and the Redlands - is properly served by Darlington Range (UHF, vertical, 1.8 kW), and the north-western corridor toward Kilcoy and Esk by Gregors Creek (UHF, vertical, 3 kW). My TV auto-tuned the wrong region's channels. Why?
Brisbane's fringe overlaps the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast transmission areas, so an auto-scan can lock onto the wrong market - you get the right networks with the wrong local news and EPG. The fix is aiming the antenna correctly for your serving site, then re-scanning; on some TVs a manual scan of the correct RF channels is faster.
Do I need a new antenna if I am aimed at the wrong site?
Often yes, and not because of age: Mount Coot-tha needs a VHF antenna mounted horizontally, while Darlington Range and Gregors Creek need UHF antennas mounted vertically. The element sizes and the mounting plane are physically different. A combination antenna exists but compromises both bands - the honest answer depends on your measured signal, not a rule of thumb.
