The local layer

The Brisbane-specific causes national guides miss

The south-east polarisation trap. If you are in Springwood, Daisy Hill, Beenleigh, Logan or the Redlands and reception has "always been average", check which way your antenna's elements run. This region is served by Darlington Range - UHF, vertically polarised, 1.8 kW - while most antennas ever fitted point horizontally at Mount Coot-tha, which the terrain here shadows. Over-amplification in the inner city. Mount Coot-tha transmits at 50 kW. Close to it, an amplifier on an already-strong signal overloads the tuner - the picture breaks up in a way that looks exactly like weak signal, and a second booster makes it worse again. If your reception got worse after "boosting", this is why.

4G/5G in the 700 MHz band. The frequencies directly above TV now carry mobile signal. Older wideband antennas and amplifiers swallow it whole and overload. The fix is a 4G filter or a current antenna - more gain makes this one worse too.

The wrong-market auto-tune. Brisbane fringe TVs happily lock onto Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast transmitters and store the wrong region's channels. Right networks, wrong news, mediocre signal. A manual retune against the correct RF channels fixes it - walk-through in this guide.

Storms and wildlife. Brisbane's storm season moves antennas and cockatoos strip cable insulation - both cause the fair-weather-only pattern. If reception changed after a specific storm, photograph the roof before anything is touched: it matters for insurance.

Why does my TV pixelate only when it rains or blows?

Because your signal is marginal: strong enough in still, dry air, not strong enough once rain attenuates it or wind moves a tired antenna. The cause is usually a worn antenna, corroded connections, or - in Brisbane's south-east - an antenna in the wrong polarisation plane for the Darlington Range transmitter.

Will a signal booster fix my bad reception?

Only if the problem is genuinely weak signal on long cable runs or many outlets. A booster cannot fix a polarisation mismatch, a broken cable or interference - and in inner Brisbane it routinely makes reception worse by overloading the tuner on an already-strong Mount Coot-tha signal.

Why are some channels missing but not others?

Free-to-air channels travel in network groups, one frequency per network. A whole group missing means that one frequency is not arriving - an aim, band or retune problem - while a random scatter of missing channels usually points at signal quality.
