How to boost TV antenna signal - and when a booster makes it worse

The internet will sell you a $40 amplifier for every reception problem. A signal meter tells a different story. Here is what actually raises signal quality, in cost order.

Cost: nothing to nearly nothing

The improvements that beat any booster

Fix the plane first. The single biggest signal “boost” in Brisbane is pointing the antenna correctly: horizontal for Mount Coot-tha, vertical for Darlington Range. An antenna on the wrong plane throws away more signal than any amplifier can add back. If your antenna’s elements do not match your neighbours’ on the same street, that is a clue.

Replace the corroded joins. Queensland humidity destroys crimp connections and old splitters from the inside. One green-crusted F-connector can cost more decibels than a whole amplifier provides. Remaking joins with sealed fittings is cheap and permanent.

Remove the splits you do not use. Every splitter output halves the signal - including the outputs feeding rooms with no TV. Capping unused legs, or bypassing a four-way splitter that only feeds one TV, is free signal.

Shorten and upgrade the cable. Thirty-year-old 75-ohm cable with a saggy loop around the eaves loses signal every metre. Quad-shield RG6 on a direct route keeps what the antenna caught.

And the homemade tricks - foil, coat hangers, “aiming at the storm”? Entertainment, not engineering. Nothing stuck to an antenna adds gain to a system whose real fault is a rusted join or the wrong plane.

When an amplifier genuinely earns its keep

Amplifiers solve one problem: signal that arrives adequate at the antenna but gets divided or attenuated below it. The two kinds matter:

A masthead amplifier sits at the antenna and boosts the signal before the cable run and splitters take their share. It is the right tool on the reception fringe - Burpengary northwards, the D’Aguilar foothills, acreage with long cable runs.

A distribution amplifier sits at the splitter and only makes up for splitting losses. It is the right tool in a house with five TV points off one antenna - and useless if the signal arriving from the roof is already poor, because it amplifies the noise along with the picture.

The decision is a number, not a feeling: a meter reading at the antenna and at the outlets says which losses are where. That reading is exactly what our $129 to $179 service call produces - credited toward whatever fix it recommends, including “no amplifier needed”. And when the reading shows the antenna itself is wrong-band for your transmitter, the fix is the right antenna installed properly - not more amplification.

The Brisbane special

When a booster actively makes reception worse

Mount Coot-tha transmits at 50 kW, omnidirectionally, from the middle of the city. Within about 15 kilometres of it, most homes receive more signal than a tuner needs. Add an amplifier there and you overload the tuner: pictures break up in a way that looks exactly like weak signal, which convinces people to buy a bigger amplifier. We remove boosters from inner-Brisbane systems almost as often as we install them on the fringe.

Rule of thumb: if you live inside the middle ring and your reception is bad, the fault is almost never a lack of amplification - it is the plane, a join, a splitter, or reflections off nearby buildings. Fix those and the picture snaps clean.
